Set in Joanna, the typeface designed by Gill in 1930, the Essay was the first use of this now famous typeface.

Saunders mould-made, not finish, rag paper; end matter set in Monotype Gill Sans Light on Mohawk Superfine Smooth White. Total edition of 600 copies. Bound by Clare Skelton in black leather, with Japanese paper doublures and leather joints; sewn headbands; onlay design of brown leather on front and back covers, reading ‘Go Ye’; title in gilt on spine; aeg. Black drop-back box. This is one of nineteen special copies especially bound by Clare Skelton, a member of the Designer’s Bookbinders, to her own design. Fine.
