Silver Buckle Press – Exquisite Horse.
(Silver Buckle Press) Exquisite Horse. Madison, WI. 1997. Thirty-two contemporary book artists and letterpress printers collaborated on this project. Prints are housed in a many colored dropback box measuring 16″ x 11.75″ x 1″ when closed. The inner tray is divided by a wall that separates the head and tail parts. Each artist designed and printed 100 copies of a section of a quadruped, with the specifications that the parts would meet in the middle. The displayed prints can be arranged and re-configured to create many combinations. In an edition of 100 copies, this is No. 68 of 60 copies for sale. Fine.
There is a familial connection between this book and The Exquisite Corpse, produced by the same press. The printers involved in The Exquisite Corpse were asked to recommend other printers’ names for this book, so that the printing network would be spread even wider. These two books form a major sampler of contemporary printing technique and printmakers working at that time in the United States.
