Shakespeare’s The Tempest, in a Fine Binding by Sue Doggett
(Doggett, Sue) The Tempest – a sketchbook. Unique book illustrated and bound by Sue Doggett. [London.] 1995. 32 worked leaves. 12” x 9.25”. Boxed. Fine.
Doggett writes: “The text of the book is The Tempest by William Shakespeare and is produced by hand using a typewriter and calligraphy. The pages are made from handmade paper interspersed with tracing paper that allows text and imagery to be seen in multiples. The text is illustrated throughout with a combination of treated photocopy, drawings, and paintings. The endpapers are made from spatter and wash watercolors. The binding technique is tongue-in-slot and the cover boards are sculpted using board and painted acrylic texture paste. The spine and board leather are dyed with vegetable dyes with additional ink drawing. The shipwreck is made from found brass and metal pins and the rigging is constructed from sewing thread and bookbinder’s mull.”
This superb production, with its color, design, technique and overall beauty, has been shown at the American Craft Museum, New York.
