(Chuck Close) Lucas.
(Chuck Close) Lucas. Pace Prints. New York. 1991. 10” x 8”. Printed from magnesium plates photographically reduced forty percent from the original state proofs. Printed on Mohawk Superfine Cover in exactly the same manner as the originals. The proofs are in two accordion fold sections with green cloth end-boards. One is State Proofs, and the other is Progressive Proofs. State Proofs document the amount of linoleum cut away and the information remaining at each step of the print’s development. Progressive Proofs illustrate the accumulated layering of the ‘states,’ one on top of the other, at each step of the print’s development. The finished print is the layered accumulation of all seven states. Laid in a green dropback box, titled on the spine LUCAS. The box has a laser-engraved inset cover plate of 8.5” x “ 7.375”. One in an edition of 100 copies, plus 10 artist‘s proofs and 5 collaborator copies, signed, numbered and dated by the artist. Fine.
This book documents the evolution of a reduction block linoleum cut created by Close in 1988. It is a fine example of print development.
Born in Wisconsin in 1940, Close has a worldwide reputation for his highly focused minimalistic photo-realism paintings and figurative graphics, etchings and screen prints, often prepared as larger than life images. “Close’s [prints] are labor intensive and time consuming … [It] is not unusual for one print to take upward of two years to complete. Close has complete respect for, and trust in, the technical processes - and the collaboration with master printers - essential to the creation of his prints. The creative process is as important to Close as the finished product.” - Chuck Close website. Close was awarded the U.S. National Medal of Arts in 2000.
