Thomas Traherne (1637-74) was ordained in 1660. He wrote various religious works as well as poetry. His poetry expresses a rapturous joy in creation while the boundless potential of man’s mind and spirit is his recurrent theme.

(simplemente maria press) Unearthed. With wrappered chapbook ‘notes from below’. Artist’s book by Mary Heebner. Santa Barbara. 2011. Box – 12.5” x 12.5” x 2.5”. Marble lid – 12” x 12” x 0.25”. Box – 11.5”x 11.5”. Wrappered book – 8.75” x 6”. Letterpress printing and binding by The Lumino Press, Santa Barbara, editioned by hand on a Vandercook UNI cylinder press. Centaur and Futura fonts used throughout. The poem, “Unearthed” is printed letterpress on 8 sheets of handmade overbeaten abaca paper plus one sheet of ochre-pigmented kozo paper, interleaved with eight mixed-media prints from the Unearthed: Patagonia series of paintings. Each print is individually overpainted with watercolor.

A journal chapbook, notes from below, rests in a niche at the bottom of a wooden box. Graphite sketches of vessels accompany journal entries, and are printed on Khadi cotton rag paper handmade in Tamil Nadu. Ink washes individually added to each book. The chapbook’s cover is terra cotta Cave paper, printed with a line drawing of a fingerprint.

All in a box of straight-grain pine accented with paduak or wenge wood, and covered with a lid of tumbled Siena travertine marble. Each book cover is individually painted and signed. New. Both books signed and numbered by Mary Heeber. Fine.

Heebner writes in the chapbook: ‘notes’ about this edition:
“The origin of this project began with two consecutive trips to Chilean Patagonia. Riding horses through the rugged terrain of the Patagonian Sierra, we came upon middens and petrified remnants of ancient forests. In Last Hope Sound, Puerto Natales, I sketched a collection of messen, the indigenous Mapuche amphoras and ceremonial vessels. Later in my Santa Barbara studio I made two series of paintings: Below and Beneath and Unearthed. This book draws upon all of that work.”

(Peter Malutzki) Stundenbuch. Artist’s book by Peter Malutzki. Flörsheim/Main 2010. 288 pages. 8.25” x 5.75”. The model was a parchment manuscript of the collection of the Herzog August Bibliothek Wolfenbüttel: the Book of Hours of Duke Augustus the Younger. Almost all texts of the prayer-book (written in an old form of the German language, related to Dutch and English) are used for the ‘remake’. Parts of the old pictures were used for the design of the 81 picture pages of the new book. The pictures were printed with polymer-plates, the gildings are done with 22.5-carat gold leaf. Transcription of the hand written texts by Peter Malutzki, who also did the design, handset and letterpress. Embossed black linen-over-board cover, in gray Fabriano slipcase. An edition of 50 numbered and signed copies. Fine.

A winning entry for the 2011 MCBA prize.

This book is Malutzki’s attempt to bring the content of a 500 years old book into a modern contemporary artist’s book form. A ‘Remake’ of an Book of Hours from the early 16th century.
