(Thielen, Beth) Crime and Poverty. Unique pop-up cut-out artist’s book designed, written and made by Beth Thielen. [California.] 1998. Accordion fold with three openings, with a 4″ x 2.75″ cut-out at each fold. 15″ x 11.5″. Made from monoprinted templates and handprinted by the artist on an Ettan etching press in various colors. 100% rag acid-free white Arches Cover paper. The two small booklets in two folds have text and are made of red, brown and green Unryu, printed from a Machintosch Performa 450. The font is 9 pt Geneva, using a StyleWriter II printer. Pop-ups on pages are hand-cut and fixed into place by the artist. Cover with etched illustrations over both boards, which are acid-free and lignin-free, with multi-color strings which tie at each side of the boards. Gray linen book cloth for the slipcase. Colophon laid in and signed by Thielen. Fine.

Another marvelous and moving work from the talented Beth Thielen, with sparse and eloquent prose which consists of short pieces about her experiences with the people she came into contact with in her position as art teacher in the California Corrections system.

Made from monoprinted templates on an Ettan etching press on 100% rag, acid free, white Arches cover. Each page was handcut by the artist. Cover with etching. The cover and slipcase boards are acid free, lignin free, binder’s board, with black linen book cloth for the book spine and slipcase. No. 10 in an edition of 10 copies, signed by the artist in the book, as well as on a separate card description.

Together with: Why the Revolving Door: the Neighborhood, the Prisons. Sculptural pop-up book designed, printed and made by Beth Thielen. [California.] 1993. 11.5″ x 8″. Made from monoprinted templates which vary in color and textural application. Hand printed by the artist on an Ettan etching press on 100% rag paper, acid free, white and black Arches Cover. Each page handcut and bound by the artist. Etching on cover. Cover and slipcase boards of acid free binder’s board, with black linen book cloth for the book spine and slipcase. Artist’s Proof in an edition of 20 copies, signed by the artist, as well as on a separate card description. Artist’s Proof in an edition of 20 copies, signed by Thielen. Fine.

Seven dramatic pop-up scenes of urban and prison life, each with a relevant hand-written pencil commentary by the artist on the bottom of each double-page spread.

The two books are housed together in a double slipcase to form a unique specially made matching set.

(Kowalsky, Elaine) Heart Rendering Stuff (and Other Such Stories). Elaine Kowalsky in collaboration with Charles Gledhill. London. 1988. 8.75″ x 15″. Eight original color lithographs and silkscreens, drawn and printed by the artist on fabriano Rosapina Bianco paper. Bound by Charles Gledhill in multi-colored paper over boards with title in black on front cover. The book is composed of 8 separate pop-ups combining the techniques of lithography and silkscreen on the themes of love, loneliness and lust in the post-modern age. The Pop-up devices can be read chronologically by turning the pages or extended into a panorama. Dropback box. No. 6 in an edition of 12 numbered copies signed by Elaine Kowalsky. Fine.

To mark Kowalsky’s received the Henry Moore Fellowship in Printmaking; the Leeds City Art Gallery held a major exhibition of her work in 1988. Kowalsky was a Canadian artist who lived and worked in London for over 30 years. She passed away a few years ago.

Charles Gledhill is a bookbinder known for his work with book artists and as a conservator of rare books.

(Circle Press) Bluebeard’s Castle. [Poetry by] Roy Fisher for 9 3-dimensional pop-up designs by Ron King. Guildford. 1972 . Folding chemise opening at the center to resemble a pair of doors. Each quire printed on differently colored paper, color screen prints and pop-ups (2 incorporating foil and 1 with metal rods). 10 loose 4 page sections silk screened through onto Hollingsworth paper placed into a cardboard folder and held in a black plexiglas tray with a transparent lid. No. 157 of 175 copies (plus 15 proofs). Prospectuses and related ephemera laid in. Fine.

“Based on the opera by Bartok, the visual theme of the book is represented by nine pop-up constructions; the portcullis, the castle and seven secret chambers with the verse incorporated into the design printed in Optima. ”

King writes in Cooking the Books: “Bluebeard marked my break from the traditional approach in previous books. I designed it with encouragement from Pat Gilmour and aided by her research. …I sent the mock-up of the book to Roy Fisher who, in the matter of a few weeks came up with the perfect solution. The voices were to come from the rooms rather than from the characters. This was my first cutting and creasing adventure.”
