(Jan Owen – Calligrapher) When Words Fail. Artist’s unique calligraphic fold-out/hanging book by Jan Owen. [Maine.] 2005. Open – 46” x 15.2”. Acrylic and sumi ink on paper with woven painted Tyvek. At each interior end of the work are two strips in red, blue and silver, which are evocative of the USA flag. Strips of red, blue, green and silver Tyvek woven to form patterns, as well as several fine ‘threads’ of Tyvek to complete the design. The outer side is made with a dense bookbinder’s board with a braided black linen cord for hanging. The boards are paste painted black/gray with white paper title label on front. In a protective black cloth over board folder with black ties and gray paper title label on front and small white label on the spine. Signed and dated in pencil by Jan Owen. Fine.

Texts include words by Tolstoy, Emily Dickinson, Edward Thomas, Robinson Jeffers and Walt Whitman. The powerful and moving texts are reflections on life – with war, peace, corruption and the many conditions of life as we have to live it.
Owen writes: “Paste paper is a 17th century method of decorating paper. It is a spontaneous and fluid way of coloring and creating pattern which dries flat so that I can write on it. I cook flour and water, add acrylic paint and brush it on an acid-free white paper to make the colored backgrounds. There are usually two layers and the last may have metallic powder sprinkled in. The lettering is written with a metal pen and acrylic paint; sometimes a brush mark in sumi ink or acrylic. The weaving is done with strips of painted Tyvek – a strong plastic that does not tear and holds sharp folds.
“There is Tyvek tape along the back edges and folded and painted Tyvek on the back of the paper for strength. Because it is made of paper, changes in humidity and temperature may cause the book to curl as it hangs. It usually ‘settles down’ or may be folded and weighted down for a bit. The paper is given a light wax coating to protect it from fingerprints.”

Those who know and collect her books can confirm that this is the case with all her work. This book is a delight. Schwartzott decided to include the facsimiles of both the English and Japanese versions as she felt the footnotes are very interesting and helpful, and for those that can read Japanese, the subtle nuances of that language are available.

Poem by Maria Elena Cruz Varela. Book design, calligraphy and binding by Rose Folsom. Silver Spring. Maryland. 1998. 108p. 10.5” x 8”. Xerography on vellum paper, photography. Cream cloth boards with stitching on spine. In an ochre card folder, with title written in calligraphy on front. No. 8 of 15 signed copies. Fine. Inscribed to a previous owner by the artist.

This book won First Prize at “Book Explorations ‘99’”, sponsored by The New Art Forum in Kingston, MA.

Folsom writes: “In 1996, I began to reflect on the end of the century. Mycentury. Even though I have only lived half of it, I identify with the 20th century as I do my country of birth. I cannot picture myself outside of it. I am aware of how it has formed me, and how I cannot separate myself from it. The next century will, in a way, belong to somebody else. It will be mine only second-hand. There will be people born in the 21st century who never knew the 20th, my century. This book is a collection of larger-than-life photos of faces of the people who formed my century, ranging from Elvis Presley to Igor Stravinsky; from Mahatma Gandhi to Robert Oppenheimer to Rudolf Nureyev. The photos are accompanied by a poem entitled ‘Love Song for Difficult Times’ by a Cuban poet who was born the same year I was.

“This book is a way of saying farewell to my century, as all of us, about to be refugees, are nudged by time over the border from our own century into the unknown of the next.”
